Today, October 2, near the memorial Obelisk to students and teachers who died in the struggle for Ukraine’s independence, the university community traditionally honored the memory of the University’s student, Hero of the Heavenly Hundred, Hero of Ukraine Roman Huryk. The deceased’s family, friends, and colleagues who came to honor his feat attended the event.
Today, Roman could be 30 years old, but his life was cut short at 19, when he stood up for his principles and ideals, being ready to give everything for the freedom of his country. In his short but vivid life story, Roman Huryk left a bright mark, reminding us of the power of patriotism and courage of the younger generation.
“Today we gathered in the courtyard of the University to honor the memory of the Hero of Ukraine, student Roman Huryk, who died in 2014 in the fight for our independence during the Revolution of Dignity. In addition, we honor the memory of all the fallen students and graduates of our University, and there are 52 of them in total. It is very important to demonstrate to the second generation the patriotism that will strengthen their spirit. They must understand that today we need to go to our Victory together every day, in small steps! As a university community, we are responsible for educating national-patriotic youth. We must demonstrate resilience and indomitability!” emphasized Valentyna Yakubiv, the first vice-rector of the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University.
“30 years is a completely adult man. It is very sad and a pity that no one will know how his life would have turned out. I know one thing: if he were alive, he would be in the east now,” said Roman Huryk’s mother, Iryna Huryk. “I am very grateful to the Precarpathian University. This is the educational institution that every year honors and remembers our Heroes, including my son. We communicate, share memories. It is priceless! Now the main thing is to pass on history to our younger generations, children, to tell who fought for what, and continues to do so now, preserving our independence and freedom!”, added the Hero’s mother.
The terrible events during the Revolution of Dignity not only took the lives of young people, but also became a catalyst for changes in society, indicating the importance of the struggle for dignity, freedom and human rights. The memory of Roman and other Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred teaches us to unite, as well as to be ready to act for justice. We must continue their work, living by the ideals they fought for, and remembering their feat in the history of our country.
