On December 14, 2023, at the age of 93, Ustenko Oleksandr Andriyovych, a Ukrainian scientist, economist and politician, rector of the Ivano-Frankivsk Pedagogical Institute (1967–1980), rector in 1974–2002 of the Ternopil National Economic University (now the West Ukrainian National University), People’s Deputy of Ukraine of the fourth convocation, Honorary Professor of the Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University (since 2015), passed away.

Tens of thousands of graduates, some of whom have become university teachers and professors, continue his work. He lives on in his students, rectors, friends, colleagues, and family.
For reference. Oleksandr Andriyovych was born on October 17, 1930 in Vinnytsia. In 1954, he graduated from Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State University. He received a law degree. In 1962–1964, he studied at the postgraduate course at the Department of Political Economy of the Ivan Franko Lviv State University. In 1965, he defended his PhD thesis on the topic: “Changes in the Nature of Labor of Industrial Workers”. From June 1967 to February 1980, he was the rector of the Vasyl Stefanyk Ivano-Frankivsk Pedagogical Institute. From April 1984, he was the rector, and from April 2002, he was the president, chairman of the supervisory board of the Ternopil Academy of National Economy. From April 2002 to March 2005, – People’s Deputy of Ukraine of the 4th convocation, elected from electoral district No. 164 of Ternopil region. Worked in the faction of the Bloc “Our Ukraine”. Head of the subcommittee on professional education of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Science and Education. Field of scientific research: political economy, problems of labor resources use, economic problems of higher education. Published over 200 works, including 6 monographs. Author and co-author of articles in the three-volume encyclopedia of Ukraine, economic textbooks and staff, in particular “Political Economy” (2002). For a significant contribution to the development of science and the training of highly qualified specialists for the national economy, he was awarded the honorary title “Honored Worker of Public Education of the Ukrainian SSR”. For scientific and educational achievements, he was awarded the Diploma of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine.
